cons: well i found out what the chipset was (google is your friend) cleaned off all the stuff i originally installed. the utility from encore looked fancy but worked like cr*p. anyhow.. i found out it was a realtek rtl8187, went to the realtek website, downloaded these drivers to the desktop. plugged in the device, told it the drivers were in the said folder and the rest is history. the driver package from what i recall does not have a config utility but i just used the windows xp wireless zero config utility (so make sure this is on in your services-in case it is off). it works like a champ now. sorry about the step by step, trying to make it easier for newbies. also i should note, it is on a 6 foot usb extension that is hanging on a wallhook. it's hooked to my desktop downstairs and the signal is ok off the from the front usb (but prone to being snapped off) and fair from the back usb. having it on the extension brings it off the back of my desktop for a much better signal.
