the brainchild of otto preminger (who would later helm exodus and alligator), sissi started life as a german heimat movie, but by the time preminger completed it he had too many modernist ideas, and the film started losing money. it eventually made it to hollywood, where producers did not think the ending was as thrilling as premingers original. perhaps they also felt the couple shouldnt be so rich. the fanciest clothes for a wedding/coronation scene were apparently nicked from the set of gone with the wind for sissis wedding in the final film, while sissis slow-gig movement and romantic subplot are more reminiscent of gone with the wind than love me or leave me.

sissi: the young empress was originally made in berlin and distributed in english. its the third of the trilogy with frequent casting changes, since the original sissi co-stars greta garbo. the original is shorter than the hollywood versions, and i hope its shorter than the hollywood versions (who knows). rudolf rittner has a small role as sissis contemporary, franz josef. in this screencap, sophie and franzjosef have just made peace with hungary. in real life, hungary did not recognize the peace treaty. there were more battles to come.
the first sissi is a remake of a farewell to arms (1932), a novel written by american expat ernest hemingway. sissi is played by the idealized garbo, the name a reference to garboís first name, anna. the movie emphasizes her innocence and dull repose. she is a blank slate, whose soul she gradually fills out.
